It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll)

Ready to kick-start your week?  AC/DC’s It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll) is just the ticket.  I posted a story, The Zen of AC/DC, featuring this song and it recently occurred to me that perhaps you haven’t heard it.  Or, haven’t heard the original T.N.T. song with Bon Scott.  I heart Bon Scott, so naturally I took for granted that you were all familiar with this track.

AC/DC’s new album Rock or Bust will be released December 2, 2014.  Sadly, it will not feature Malcolm Young, who is reportedly suffering from dementia.

Here are the lyrics to It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll).  Original credits are listed, below.  Enjoy!

Ridin’ down the highway
Goin’ to a show
Stop in all the byways
Playin’ rock ‘n’ roll
Gettin’ robbed
Gettin’ stoned
Gettin’ beat up
Broken boned
Gettin’ had
Gettin’ took
I tell you folks
It’s harder than it looks

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
If you think it’s easy doin’ one night stands
Try playin’ in a rock roll band
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll

Hotel motel
Make you wanna cry
Ladies do the hard sell
Know the reason why
Gettin’ old
Gettin’ grey
Gettin’ ripped off
Underpaid
Gettin’ sold
Second hand
That’s how it goes
Playin’ in a band

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
If you wanna be a star of stage and screen
Look out it’s rough and mean

It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll
It’s a long way to the top if you wanna rock ‘n’ roll

Well it’s a long way
It’s a long way, you should’ve told me
It’s a long way, such a long way….

  2. Angus Young was one of my favorite guitarists growing up. AC/DC still makes my daily playlist most of the week. I’m partial to Bon Scott, but Brian Johnson has his moments for me. I love that Young’s big influence was Little Richard…and you can sense it in the earlier albums. Nice choice.

    1. Thank you, Nathan! It’s amazing that they’ve stayed at the top of rock music for decades, isn’t it? I never get tired of listening to them. Dave Evans’ “Can I Sit Next to You, Girl” is a great song, although I prefer Bon Scott’s version. Brian Johnson still commands arenas, so enough said about him 🙂 Have you seen Angus Young and Malcolm Young play live with the Stones? If not, here they are doing Rock Me Baby. Hope you like it, and thanks again Nathan 🙂

Any day is an AC/DC day! I have been a fan for decades, and although I started with Back In Black (like many, I suppose), my heart lies with the Classic Bon Scott albums, particularly High Voltage and Powerage, but you can’t go wrong with the other four either!

    1. Hi Ian! I’m with you on all points. If you come across the original issue T.N.T. (released in Australia) be sure to add it to your collection. I’ve heard there’s a more recent release, but from what I understand it’s a remake with Brian Johnson. Nothing wrong with him, of course, but Bon Scott is…Bon Scott. Classic AC/DC, as you put it.
      Thanks, Ian 🙂
