“Gimme love, my brother, it’s just a kiss away, it’s just a kiss away…It’s just some love away, let’s give some love away, let’s give some love away….”
In an earlier post Do You Hear Voices? I referenced The Rolling Stones’ song Gimme Shelter. It recently occurred to me that perhaps you’re not all familiar with it. While the original is one of my all-time favorites, I’d like to share this beautiful version with an equally beautiful message for us all.
Here is Playing For Change performing Gimme Shelter. Taj Mahal makes an appearance at 1:58!
Playing For Change is a multimedia movement created to inspire, connect, and bring peace to the world through music.
Song lyrics and credits, below. Enjoy!
Oh, a storm is threatenin’
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade awayWar, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayOh, see the fire is sweepin’
Our very street today
Burns like a red coal carpet
Mad bull’s lost its wayWar, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayOh, a storm is threatenin’
My very life today
If I don’t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I’m gonna fade awayWar, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
War, children, it’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayIt’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot away
It’s just a shot awayGimme love, my brother
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
Gimme love, my brother
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss awayIt’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just a kiss away
It’s just some love awayLet’s give some love away
Let’s give some love away
Let’s give some love away
Let’s give some love away

Hi Charles!
It’s great to see you, thank you for stopping by. I haven’t seen Taj Mahal live though I imagine his performances are wonderful. This is the first I’ve heard of The Electric Flag and I will have to find some of their music. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.
Your wishes and blessings are much appreciated and you’ve made me smile.
I also hope that this new year is filled with everything beautiful for you, Charles.

Oh dear sorry Danica, I got your name wrong, not a good start to the year! The Electric flag was a big band rock group, that had a great live show, but only put out one LP, just before they broke up in the early 70’s, it was called long time coming. The group also included people like Buddy Miles, Mike Bloomfield, Marcus Doubleday and many more. Hendrix loved them, and said to friends that he used to say he to drugged to perform and then go and watch the Electric flag. Charles 🙂

That made me laugh, thanks Charles! It’s okay, I know that you know my name :). I just discovered that Electric Flag performed at Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. It’s a shame that they only released one album. They had quite a lineup and inspired so many, including the great Jimi Hendrix as you mention.
I hope that your new year is off to a terrific start!

Yes, met my target at the shop, and had one of my poems published in a blog-poetry magazine run by Suzy Hazelwood, one of my followers, so things are great, the sun is warm, I have the weekend off, so have a great weekend, Charles. 🙂

Congratulations, Charles! Those accomplishments are especially impressive considering that we’re only in the first week!
Thank you and enjoy your much-deserved weekend off 🙂

Hi Robin!
It’s a great song, isn’t it? The change in lyrics works very well with this performance. The harmony they achieve with musicians around the world is wonderful to watch too. I first heard Playing For Change a few years ago although I’ve only seen a handful of their videos. I’m really glad that you like this one.
