I Love a Rainy Night

Heavy rain pellets shimmer in the flickering neon lights.  The wind grabs my scarf and pushes me back.  Leaning forward I step into the crosswalk, hoping drivers are paying attention.  The asphalt glistens and rainwater rushes along the curbs overflowing the gutters.  Abandoned umbrellas tumble down the street.

My fingers, red and numb, fumble with the keys, finally the deadbolt clicks.  What the…?  Papers strewn across the floor, potted plants overturned…dirt scattered over furniture….Did feral cats break in?

Oh. Right.

Slowly savouring too-hot tea this morning, I had watched the faint glow behind the clouds gently hover, then bloom over the city.

I slid open the window pane.  “Rain, wind.  Storm warning is still….”    I paused.  These windows aren’t that big.  I closed them partway.  They’ll be okay.

How did these blankets get covered in dirt?  The wind couldn’t have been that strong, could it?  I’m doing laundry tomorrow anyway… I run the vacuum over the floor, the furniture, the windowsills, the blankets.

Nope, the bedding will have to be done.  My whole body protests, tired from the day.  I’ll just fold over the corners and rest a bit first.  Oh, no.  Potting soil everywhere.  *Le sigh*.  I strip the bed.  Might as well gather the other laundry too….

Freshly cleaned linens!  Is there anything better in the world?  Sinking back into plush blankets and pillows…. Well, I love a rainy night…!

  1. A new way of looking at that song. I used to hear it all the time in 1981 but an episode of Family Guy brought this song back into memory recently and now after reading this, I’m afraid I’m going to have to listen to it.

  2. I like my open windows too, and have had that kind of experience enough times that you’d think I’d learn, but I’m a repeat offender!
I always wash the linens on Sunday when we get up — I like to start the week fresh 🙂

    1. I leave them open most days and it’s caused some problems but never a mess quite like this one. A squirrel came in once but he was pretty well behaved and then went his own way.
I love those fresh starts too! 🙂
