Bring the Love to What You Do

“Happy Friday!”  He called out to passersby.  “Have a great day!”  Rain dripped from his ball cap to his shoulders.  He held out a free local news-and-views paper to commuters rushing between trains and buses.  They mostly ignored him.

“Jay!”  He turned and smiled in recognition.  “Where have you been?”

“I wasn’t gone that long,” he replied, surprised.

“Well, we noticed you were gone.”  I’m sure I wasn’t the only one.

“I went on vacation!”  On minimum wage?  Maybe he’s an eccentric millionaire.  Maybe he had a Groupon for a local tourist trap.

“Glad you’re back, Jay.”  He put a paper in my outstretched hand, which I never read.  I continued down the sidewalk and smiled.

“Have a wonderful day!  Happy Friday!”

Bring the love to what you do.  It makes all the difference.

    1. Thank you very much, G! Jay the Free Paper Guy adds so much to that busy hub of the city. He starts before the early morning rush hour and stands outside for several hours in all weather conditions, trying to give away papers and is generally ignored… all for minimum wage. He’s always outgoing and cheerful, genuinely wishing everyone a great and happy day. I don’t know how he does it but I’m glad he does. Many people have the same job but nobody else brings the love like he does.

          1. Unfortunately the coffee shop (our only one) moved to another city but the diner is thriving. It is a place of family and friendship where visitors from close or far are welcomed into our fellowship. When I need a kind word and smile, I am there with bells on!

    1. Haha, I love this! Thanks, Rich! The work weeks have a way of grinding on and building from one to the next, don’t they? I hope your chores aren’t too exhausting or that they’ll at least bring you some satisfaction when they’re done. Dive into plans and design for your music room — that’s sure to bring you some joy.
“Push out the jive…bring in the love!” I’m going to have to try this.
