“Let me give you a hand.” He unloaded the car trunk. “Moving?”
She slowly nodded, silent.
I know that life ain’t always good to you
I’ve seen exactly what it put you through
Thrown you around and turned you upside down
“It’s good to see you. Been a while.”
She smiled weakly.
And so you, you got to thinking there was no way out
You started sinking and it pulled you down
“Sorry….”
“It’s ok.” He said, brushing her tear-stained cheek with his thumb and tucking a loose curl behind her ear.
It may be tough, you’ve got to get back up
You know life ain’t over yet
“Let me carry these up for you.”
She started to protest.
“Let me.”
I’m here for you so don’t forget
You can count on me
I will carry you ’til you carry on
Watching her hold her composure sent a pang through his chest.
Anytime you need someone
Somebody strong to lean on
Well you can count on me to hold you ’til that healing is done
He took her keys and put the suitcase and tote bag at the foot of the bed, then stacked the boxes in the corner.
And every time you fall apart
You can hide here in my arms
And you can count on me to hold you ’til that feeling is gone
“Hey, I was going to grab a bite. Join me?”
She shook her head; she wouldn’t be much company right now.
I wonder why nobody’s waiting on you
I’d like to be the one to pull you through
Your darkest times
I’d love to be the light that finds you
“You know I hate eating alone.”
She remembered.
I see a silver lining on your cloud
I’ll pick you up whenever you fall down
“She’ll have the angus burger with the works — fry the onions — and the cobb salad.”
She laughed.
Just take my hand and I will help you stand
You know that life ain’t over yet
God, he loved her laugh.
I’m here for you so don’t forget
You can count on me cause I will carry you ’til you carry on…
“Thank you,” she said.
Anytime you need someone
“Always.” He squeezed her hand across the table.
You can count on me to hold you ’til that feeling is gone

Interesting use of lyrics here, I did a similar thing with my first book “Rock and Roll Children” but it was nothing like this. Well done!

I really like your less is more style of writing. I think it is effective and allows the reader to use their imagination.

Thank you! Sometimes I wonder whether I’m too succinct, so I really appreciate your kind and generous compliment. 🙂
