“I love you.”
“How much?” His voice gentle as the moonlight across the pillow.
To the moon and back, to the oceans deep….
No.
“I love you like the stars in the sky.”
He traced her collarbone with his fingertip.
Above sunny skies
Above stormy nights
Above mountains high
Above temporal delights
Always there
Always true
Always you
.

What inspired this?

It started as a bit of a memory and turned into an experiment in foreshadowing — for me, anyway. I’m not sure that translates in this small vignette.

When you began to write this, was your intent to make it “small,” or did you just sense that it was finished?

I just sensed that it was finished. I reflected on it and feel it may be(come) part of a bigger story.

For me it reads and feels like poem, and a very nice romantic one at that.
