You Started This Fire Down in My Soul

I feel so lonely night and day
I can’t get your love, I must stay away

I need you girl, by my side
Would you like to take a ride, now

I can’t get your love, I can’t get satisfaction
Uh-oh, little girl, psychotic reaction

[Psychotic Reaction – Count Five]

.

You’ve got me on my knees
I’m beggin’, darlin’ please
Darlin’ won’t you ease my worried mind

You’ve got me on my knees
I’m beggin’, darlin’ please
Darlin’ won’t you ease my worried mind

[Layla – Derek and the Dominos]

.

Well, she taught me everything
If you know what I mean

You know she was a dancer
She asked if I would be her man
You know I told her
I’d do what I can

[Mississippi Queen – Mountain]

.

There was a funky singer
Playin’ in a rock and roll band
And never had no problems
Burnin’ down one night stands

Play that funky music white boy
Lay down that boogie and play that funky music ’til you die

[Play That Funky Music – Wild Cherry]

.

Watch me, now
Work it out, baby
I’m gonna drive you crazy
Just a little bit of soul, now

Tell me, baby, do you like it like this?

[Do You Love Me (Now That I Can Dance) – The Contours]

.

Oh, you sweet thing
What’s that, baby?

Do I what?
Will I what?
Oh, baby, you know what I like

[Chantilly Lace – Big Bopper]

.

Stay just a little bit longer
Please please please
Tell me you’re goin’ to

Won’t you stay just a little bit longer
Please let me dance
Say you will

Won’t you place your sweet lips to mine
Won’t you say you love me
All of the time

[Stay – Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs]

.

When I’m feeling down
I want you above me

I search myself
I want you to find me

I forget myself
I want you to remind me

[I Touch Myself – Divinyls]

.

Just can’t
Just can’t get
Just can’t get enough

Every little thing you do
Seems to turn me on

I ain’t playin’
Stop delayin’
And make me your natural selection

Give me every little bit of your love
Make it smooth to the groove

[Do Anything – Natural Selection]

.

Caught by the rain and blinded by the lightning
We rode the storm out there on Thunder Island

I held [you] close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine
Sweet sunshine

[Thunder Island – Jay Ferguson]

.

All day, I’ve been thinkin’ about you
You’re my one desire

I wanna taste your lips
I wanna be your fantasy

Don’t know what I’d do without you
Don’t know where I’d be

I wanna kiss you all over
And over again
I wanna kiss you all over
Til the night closes in
Til the night closes in

[Kiss You All Over – Exile]

.

Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night
When everything’s a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be here anyway

Skyrockets in flight
Afternoon delight
Afternoon delight

[Afternoon Delight – Starland Vocal Band]

.

Now I told you so you ought to know
You’re so close now I can’t let you go

With you I’m not shy, to show the way I feel
With you I might try, my secrets to reveal
For you are a magnet and I am steel

I can hope that I’ll hold you for long
You’re a woman who’s lost to your song
But the love that I feel is so strong
And it can’t be wrong

[Magnet and Steel – Walter Egan]

.

We meet every day at the same café
Holding hands, making all kinds of plans
While the jukebox plays our favorite songs

We got a thing goin’ on
It’s much too strong
To let it go now

[Me and Mrs. Jones – Billy Paul]

.

Baby, you know my love for you is real
Take me where you want to

How do you like it, how do you like it
How do you like it, how do you like it

[More, More, More, Pt. 1 – Andrea True Connection]

.

My heart is full of love and desire for you
Now c’mon down and do what you gotta do

You started this fire down in my soul
Now can’t you see it’s burning outta control
C’mon, satisfy the need in me
‘Cause only your good lovin’ can set me free

Set me free

[Don’t Leave Me This Way – Thelma Houston]

    1. Thanks, Michael! I was going for a theme and storyline: if I were to create a compilation album, what would it be? This is it. Well, the first one anyway. I could keep going with different moods, themes and genres.
I smiled when I saw that there was some overlap between our selections. The hits really do have mass-appeal. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Neil. Outstanding song, isn’t it? It’s been covered a few times and I wonder how many people have heard the original. Ah yes, Afternoon Delight has such a distinctive sound I don’t think it could be written today.

  1. There are some beauts there, but also some stinkers. That’s Pop! And rather embarrassingly, I can sing along to most of these ‘hits’. Thanks for the playlist in my head (I think). But a real genuine thanks for organising this festival and for prompting me to dust of “Layla and other assorted love songs”. I love Bell Bottom Blues too.

(As you might expect, The Divinyls were known for many more songs in their country of origin)

    1. It’s better than “Video Killed The Radio Star” on repeat within the confines of a moving vehicle, though, isn’t it?
The human heart can’t really be explained — technical mastery does not a hit song make. Maybe we should do a Good Music vs. Bad Hits event.
I’m so glad that everyone is enjoying this festival! Thanks for joining in.
Oh, what an album. I do believe Bell Bottom Blues is the best among them.

(Indeed, The Divinyls are the Aussie band I referenced in the other post. Many artists probably have a similar experience: lots of success at home, and a crossover that doesn’t fully translate if at all. Unless we include Japan, which can see the inverse.)

  2. Oh yes indeed. I simultaneously glow and cringe while singing “Sky rockets in flight…”

LaOALS is up to ‘Have you ever loved a woman’ which is one of Eric’s best blues solos. Period. But little challenges BBBs, that’s for sure!

  3. Some tracks there I haven’t heard! Including Jay Ferguson’s Thunder Island, which I really should have given I’m a bit of a fan of his! Well, fan of his stuff with Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne.

Derek & The Dominos is great, though. Probably Clapton’s finest moment… though most of the exceptional guitar playing is thanks to Duane Allman.

    1. New musical discoveries are wonderful! I love Thunder Island; it’s musical storytelling at its best.

Derek & The Dominos are among my favorites. Agreed about Clapton, and while he tends to get a lot of credit for the group’s output, the magic was really from the combination of the whole group. Yes, Duane Allman was an incredible talent.
