“Jump! Jump!” The crowd chants at the barricade.
He stares into the water, finally taking off his glasses. Ripples blur into foam.
Be the love
Would it be the impact?
Be the light
Or the cold?
Be the hope
Leaning into the calm, he lets go.
In the darkest night
“Good for you, man!” Cheers erupt.
.
~~~~~~
Be the love
Be the light
Be the hope
In the darkest night
~~~~~~
.
Loud cheers from the crowd
But who was listening to his silence

Powerful, Danica. Leaves me wondering about light, hope, and what they were cheering for.

Thanks very much, J. This was inspired by an event where cheering was baffling (among other things), and I’ve reflected on it a couple times since. It makes some sense to me now, but I wanted to leave it open to interpretation here. I’ve been thinking about light and hope in another story, and it found its way into this one.

What are the last thoughts of a desperate man as people cheer his leap to death. This is quite a moment, and for a second I saw the Coliseum.

It’s a point to ponder. Perhaps the Coliseum is part of human nature, even in these moments.

For most of human history the rich decided who was human and usually reserved that category for themselves.
The rest of us were things for their amusement.
The crowds cheered as the lions tore into their prey.
Maybe It’s time for me to watch Airplane again.
